A couple of weeks ago, I spent the weekend in New York City. The first thing we did when we got to the city was head down to Memorial Plaza. I wanted to see the progress on the 9/11 Memorial and also the progress of the new World Trade Towers. Only in the past year, have we begun to “see” what’s been happening downtown. For the first 8-9 years after the towers fell, they’ve been laying foundation. They’ve been building what’s underground, which is the foundation for the new towers. I’ve always had a crazy fascination with construction, but I’ll have to admit that the most crucial part of the building, the foundation, is not the most exciting part for me to see.
In Chapter 2, we have the foundation of the Upper Story (US) solidified. God has a new plan and the foundation of the new plan starts with the point of the whole story: God goes to extreme lengths to get us back! God ruthlessly pursues us. God has not given up and has a new plan for getting us back. Chapter 2 unveils the new plan of pursuit which starts with one man named Abram.
When Abram is 75 years old, God comes to Abram and promises that he is going to build a great nation through him, and his wife Sarai. Abrams Lower Story (LS), doesn’t see this as possible – they are old and his wife is barren. After ten years or so they don’t see how it can happen, so in the LS, they take matters into their own hands and Abram fathers a child, Ishmael, with Sarai’s servant Hagar. When Abram is 99, God comes to Abram and reaffirms his promise by changing Abram’s name (father) to Abraham, which means “father of many” and Sarai’s name (princess) to Sarah, which means “queen.” This name change solidifies the promise God has made to them. They will bear a son and because they laughed at this promise, they named the son Isaac, which means “he laughs.”
THROUGH THIS NATION GOD WILL REVEAL HIMSELF AND HIS PLAN TO GET US BACK.
God’s word is true and his promises do not fail. Is that something you desperately need to hear today? Do you feel like God is asking something of you that seems impossible in your LS? Are you too old? Have you messed up? Is it just too late? Have you tried to make it happen on your own and just made a larger mess? If any of this seems true to you, you are not alone. God is pursuing you and he wants to do something in you that only he can do, but it starts with faith – by trusting our lives to him because he knows our name and where we are going, even when we can’t see the next step.
If you have a story to share, you can email me, or post here. Have a great Monday.
